Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA) is a more formal method for identifying the impacts of development on biodiversity. An EcIA can be produced as part of a wider Environmental Impact Assessment or as a standalone study. The impact assessment will systematically identify the significant impacts, quantify the effects where possible and propose mitigation measures.
Mitigation will aim to minimise adverse impacts and maximise the beneficial effects through measures such as habitat creation and management of the site and surrounding area. Sometimes mitigation is not possible on the site itself and as a last resort it may be possible to compensate for habitat and species loss on another site.
